The capital of Strathspey was established in 1765 as a planned settlement. Grantown-on-Spey has the Grantown Museum and the Craig MacLean Leisure Centre.
The main railway line from Perth to Inverness used to pass though but was closed in 1968. The Strathspey Railway is planning to reinstate the line from Aviemore and Boat of Garten to Grantown-on-Spey.
